The reason why mobile devices are successful today is because of the high volume of users on the social networks that log in and use them using their smartphones.

Before, the main function of mobile devices was to make a phone call. Today, people use them to tweet, to comment a post on Facebook or to share a picture on Instagram. All of this, from home or while walking on the street.

Data and lifestyle prove those facts:

  • Instagram is a social network app that consists in sharing content (pictures, videos…). They are more than 45 million of super active users who have posted more than a billions of pictures. Facebook acquired this application in 2012.

  • Facebook owns today more than 425 million of users log in using the mobile phone application or from a browser like Safari.

  • Today, more than 50% of Twitter users log in using their Smartphone and more than 63% of Foursquare users looks for geolocations more than once a week. Foursquare has more than 20 million of users.

Thanks to the growing success of social medias, developpers do their best to reach agreements with the most important social networks and integrate them in their OS (Operating System).

Today it’s possible to classify social networks in different groups or typologies:

  1. Social networks based on messaging: Applications that allow people to share private messages with someone else or with a group of people. Whatsapp is the most used.

  2. Social networks as a communication channel: They are considered today as a very efficient way to diffuse informations. Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook are some examples.

  3. Social networks to meet people: Those applications use the geolocation of the Smartphone to find other users of the same application, close to the users to stablish a communication. Lovoo, a dating app, is an example.

  4. Social networks based in sharing multimedia content: These ones allow users to share pictures or videos. Instagram or Pinterest belong to this category.

  5. Social networks based in geolocation: Those ones enable people to use Smartphone as a GPS and to indicate them a determined place or a  restaurant, for example. Foursquare and Yelp are some examples.

Therefore, the evolution of mobile devices and social media have changed the way we communicate and surely the best is yet to come. In a few years from now we will certainly classify all the social networks in more than 5 distincts groups.
